ESD7000CS 6-Band Radar DetectorStrengths: Robust "City Mode", Auto Mute Mode, Simple to use Weakness: No Voice Alert Not very sensitive to X band signals from the shops as the other reviews lead me to believe, the "City Mode" is quite robust and does not go off for all the signals from the stores. The Auto Mute Mode is cool, it automatically reduces the volume of all alerts after 4 seconds for as long as the signal is detected. This detector is worth the money spend on it. But it should be noted that it is a very simple detector for people who might go over the speed limit once in while with/without their knowledge and does not offer the state-of-art features provided by the more expensive detectors. 80% of readers found this review helpful. ESD7000CS 6-Band Radar DetectorStrengths: Loud Alert, City mode works well, Minimal Falsing, Compact, Mute mode works well Weakness: No visor clip, Does not save settings after power off Seems to work very well for me, I live in the country and not much laser here to test, works very well on conventional radar, very inexpensive protection, lights are not annoying at night, volume is infinitely adjustable (thumbwheel) and the mute mode works well, it also auto mutes after 4 secs or so of alert, I have experienced very minimal falsing, in fact I forget it is on a lot of the time. I did research this unit before buying and read the mixed reviews but a lot of the negatives seem to come from people that got tickets, go figure, after three days of heavy use I can definitely recommend this for the price. I am sure spending more may have resulted in a unit with more features but if you want something to remind you to keep your speed under control to avoid tickets and are not out to go 85 in a 55 all day long and expect NOT to get caught, then this unit will suffice. 79% of readers found this review helpful. A good deal for the money....Strengths: this is good for long range K/Ka band such as highway usage, which is what I rely on it for Weakness: Around town the "discrimination" is not that great, but it is accurate, giving falsings on X band(door opener/other detectors), It is not a Valentine or PassPort, but it is decent For the $30 I paid for mine, it can't be beat.... I trust my wife with it...Don't zoom around town and expect it to alert you to laser at 100ft because you'll already be screwed! I own a Passport and this performs great on Highway, and does alert in the city but like I said it is a good buy, like everything else, it is relative.... 75% of readers found this review helpful. Cobra ESD7000Strengths: Compact unit, very sensistive but not always to speed radar. Weakness: 6 band versus 9 band in other Cobra models, no voice alert. VG2 goes off in the middle of nowhere! A nice toy to verify my suspicion of where the speed traps are. I do not count on any detector to prevent a ticket. As with other Cobra models I have owned the VG/2 alert goes off when there is absolutely nothing around on back country roads. 60% of readers found this review helpful. Not a good oneStrengths: Mute & Volume control Weakness: False Alarm 6 Band Radar/Laser Detector with Volume control and Mute button. Happy DriverStrengths: 1. Simple Installation 2. Good Alert Volume 3. In City Mode it does'nt go off all the time like some other detectors Weakness: 1. System resets everytime you turn power off I have never gotten a speeding ticket my whole life. I am a careful driver, however nowdays since I commute long distances and have seen others getting tickets, I thought I will give a radar detector a try so that I am adequately warned to traps. price is terrific, but you get what you paidStrengths: Price! Price! Price! Weakness: Limited detection bands. Cheap make and feel. Tons of false alerts. I bought this simply for the deal I got. Paid less than ten to get this piece of junk, but I got what I paid. It only has 6 bands while mainstream is heading for 9 or 12 bands or even more. Very cheap make and tons of false alerts. Great BuyStrengths: Intuitive design, multiple useful features Weakness: None to speak of. I think this is a great little gizmo for the money. It has a good warranty, picks up all radar and laser alerts plus safety alerts, and mutes automatically. Easy to read--all around fills the bill for me. Decent radar detector for the money
Strengths: 1. Very good detection of VG-2 signals 2. Acceptable detection of K/Ka/X signals but shorter range 3. Loud and adjustable alert volume 4. Bright and clear enough display 5. Compact design
Weakness: 1. Frequent false alarms on X-band (automatic doors, etc.) 2. Only 6 bands as opposed to 9 ~ 12 bands on other Cobras 3. No signal strength indicator 4. Setting resets when power/car is restarted
I have bought this ESD7000 detector 3 days ago for $30 as a gift to my wife who is much careful driver than I. My neighbor recommended this to me as he's been using this model for 8 years without major complaints. I have extensively tested this against my Cobra XRS-9330 which I also bought recently.
Both ESD7000 and XRS-9330 detected VG-2 signals shot from a town cop very early & accurately from about 100ft. Both offer bright and clear enough displays although ESD7000 only has icons to indicate signals. However, ESD7000 only covers 6 bands (K, Ka, Superwide K, X, Laser, and VG-2) as compared to XRS9330 which covers 12 bands (plus Ku band for Europe, more laser/VG-2 bands). On the highway, ESD7000 also had much shorter range (~0.8 mile) compared to XRS9330 (~1.5 miles) on K/Ka bands. Both have good loud and infinitely adjustable volume dials.
City mode on both are similar and relatively reliable. I drove past the known cop ambush areas to verify its Laser and VG-2 effectiveness. Both triggered alerts at the distance when I could barely visually spot the cop, just enough to react.
Some downsides of ESD7000 is that it does not have signal strength indicator as in XRS9330 and it resets itself when power/car is restarted. False alarm is frequent even in City Mode whenever I enter a shopping center or building complex that have automatic doors. Also, Auto mute feature on it takes a bit too long (~4 seconds) to kick in even when I'm completely stationary. It gets annoying to sit in a parking lot in front of a grocery store to have to keep listening to the false alerts. The Intellimute feature on XRS9330 does not let this happen as it mutes the signal based on vehicle's speed - i.e. does not alert at very slow/stationary state.
Overall, this is not a bad buy for the money if you're not a serious speeder (like my wife) anyway, don't travel to Europe (Ku band), don't mind false alarms in parking lots, and detection range is not so much an issue as long as you have enough time to react and slow down. Why pay $100-200 for a detector if you don't really need the performance, bells & whistles, right?
